The Saskatoon Food Bank isn’t sure what August will bring with the unemployment benefit in question and the start of school.
HOUSTON – Many families struggled to put food on the table during the COVID-19 pandemic. August faces the future of unemployment benefits, which looks bleak and is close to starting school, which means it could be an even more challenging time for the Saskatoon Food Bank.
“Right now, August is a very indecisive month. We don’t know how hard August will be,” said Brian Greene, president of the Saskatoon Food Bank.
Greene said at one point during the pandemic, the Saskatoon Food Bank was handing out around 1 million pounds of food a day. Now, he said, it’s around £ 800,000 a day.
“The economy is getting better, and that will ultimately be our solution if we don’t have to do so much,” Greene said.
What the Saskatoon Food Bank really needs is job aid. It has been discontinued, but the number of volunteers has fallen sharply.
“Many companies, for example, don’t allow their employees to volunteer unless they can volunteer from home because they feel like people are so at risk,” Greene said.
The Saskatoon Food Bank went to great lengths to ensure the safety of the volunteers. It even rented more buildings to keep them separate. There are also other options for volunteers. Go to their website if you are interested.
